About KanjiSteps

KanjiSteps is a free Japanese handwriting practice tool. It brings sentence reading and stroke animation together so learners can work with text they choose, including both kanji and kana.

You can edit a sentence, view automatic furigana, listen to Japanese speech, and follow each character’s strokes. All practice features are free. Optional donations help support the site.

Data and credits

Stroke paths are adapted from KanjiVG, © Ulrich Apel and contributors, under CC BY-SA 3.0. Adapted stroke data remains under that license. Automatic readings use kuromoji.js and the IPADIC dictionary. Full data and library notices are included on the practice page. Wallet QR codes use node-qrcode and dijkstrajs; their licenses are available here.

Learning limitations

Automatic readings and browser speech can make mistakes, especially with names and ambiguous words. You can correct furigana on the page. A teacher or trusted Japanese reference can help when you need to confirm a reading or writing form.
